President's Report

Dear Chicago Business Travel Association Members:

Our Q1 Chapter Meeting is just around the corner and we've got a packed and exciting agenda. Live Auction items and packages were just announced last week as well - so make sure to take a peek at those through the Bidpal link and at the meeting. Register for the meeting here and join us at the Swissotel on Monday.

We've got a full line up of other meetings and volunteer opportunities in the pipeline as well including a Direct Member Round Table, volunteer opportunity at the Greater Chicago Food Depository, and a Member Appreciation Event. I look forward to another great year with you all.

Education and career development remain a big focus for our organization, so take advantage of other resources available to you in addition to the quarterly meetings. Leslie Evans Thorne is a regular contributor to our monthly newsletter and is a perfect example of one of these resources. My question to all of our members: What specific topics would you like to see her touch on in her articles?

Leslie Evans Thorne,

Sell Your VALUE, Not Just Skills

By Leslie Evans Thorne

Whether you are looking for a job or a new project within your existing job, if you are like most people, you focus on selling your skills. You spend lots of time talking about what you know how to do, what you’ve been trained to do, have done and can do. It's all skill-based.

Selling just skills misses the main point.  Sure, prospective employers, hiring managers, and joint venture and strategic partners want to know what you CAN do.  But, more importantly, they want to know the answers to the following questions:

-      What VALUE you can provide?

-      What kind of contribution can you make?

-      Where can you add value?  And how?

-      Can you make a difference?  And, can you prove it? Where did you make a difference in the past?

By selling your value, you address questions in the hiring manager’s mind: what can you do for me?  Why should I hire you and what do I get in return?  What will be the return on my investment in you? Make the case for why you are the right person for the job/project.

Smart companies hire value.  And, you don't need to be a PhD psychologist, an ingénue, a genius or a master innovator.  Most everyone can provide value.

Providing value is not dependent on your level of job position.  It can happen anywhere.  Recently I’ve been giving workshops in South Carolina to former employees of a manufacturing plant that closed down and moved to Mexico.  One of the class participants, a warehouse worker, told me the following story:  when he was first hired, he approached his senior supervisor to ask why there were so many customer complaints about the product. It turns out that the packaging used for shipping the product was flimsy, causing it to become damaged in transit and leading to lots of recalls, which cost the company money.

This warehouse worker took the initiative to change the packaging process by pulling together a group of fellow workers. They came up with a new, cost-effective procedure that reduced the number of complaints by 65%, saving the company hundreds of thousands of dollars. He provided a lot of value, by observing a problem and taking the initiative to solve it.

Sometimes the contributions are BIG. Like the time you wrote a manual for the company. Or changed a process. Or saved the company money.

And, sometimes the contributions are small.  Like the time you spent helping a coworker get up to speed on a project.  Or the time you served an irate customer, leading to a quick resolution over the phone.  Or, you discovered a more effective software program. name it.

Find your value. Then sell it. The benefit to you? Chances are you’ll contribute more, make more money and have more fun. And, isn’t that what most of us want?

Community Outreach

There are a few spots left for this volunteer day at The Greater Food Depository on Friday, March 23rd. Register below!

Please join us for a Volunteer Day at The Greater Food Depository on Friday, March 23. We have 20 open spots on a first-come, first-served basis.  Please use the below link to register.  You will need to create a User ID and Password if you have not previously registered.

The Greater Chicago Food Depository regularly needs volunteers to help with repacking donated food and other products. The repack session is a great introduction to the Greater Chicago Food Depository, the work they do  and the need that we have in Cook County. A lot of the food they receive at the warehouse comes in bulk quantities and volunteers are scheduled to help them break it down into more manageable sizes. In a repack session we might be sorting produce, looking over a shipment of bread, or repacking bulk dry goods (pasta, rice, beans) into smaller quantities. Together, we can properly and efficiently distribute quality food to participating food pantries, soup kitchens and shelters in Cook County, while networking with our CBTA friends and colleagues as well.

Committee Updates

CBTA’s Golf & Croquet Event 2018

The 2018 CBTA Golf & Croquet Committee would like to announce that the 2018 Q3 Golf & Croquet Event will be taking place on September 10th, 2018 immediately following the Q3 Chapter Meeting. This year we are taking our talents to the Chevy Chase Country Club in Wheeling, IL.

This beautiful course was originally designed and built in 1927 by renowned golf architect Thomas Bendelow (who also designed the world famous Medinah Course No. 3). Bendelow would explain that his designs “should present enjoyable play for both beginner and advanced players; not too hard to discourage the new player and not without challenge to the more accomplished golfer.".

The course we chose this year is a piece of history and we are going to have a great setup in their newly renovated clubhouse for a fun day of Golf & Croquet.

We are looking forward to seeing all our CBTA Members out for a day of Golf or Croquet to support our partners at DePaul University. Last year we raised over $10,000 in scholarship funds for students at the DePaul School of Hospitality Leadership.

We cannot do it without our CBTA Members so register to play with friends, co-workers and customers. Your registration includes a lunch prior to the event, your round of golf, GPS guided golf cart and dinner reception after the event.

You can register to play at: Golf & Croquet Outing Registration

We also cannot do this without the support of our sponsors! Last year we had a record number of attendees and look to see even more of our members out there on September 10th. Our event sponsorships are a great way to promote your business, engage with our members and support a great cause.

You can view the available sponsorships at: 2018 Golf Outing Sponsorship Catalog

O'Hare Airport Terminal Expansion

On February 28, Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced a place between City of Chicago and airline partners that would add 25 percent more gate capacity, modernize existing terminals, and improve the overall passenger experience.

Rahm Emanuel set a goal for O'Hare to be the best airport in the country.  The plan, an 8 year $8.5 billion project, is the first major improvement to O'Hare's terminals in more than 25 years.  Improvements include renovations made to terminals 1 & 3, terminal 2 largely rebuilt with a brand new international arrivals facility, and upgrades and expansions to terminal 5.

Many major international and domestic carriers are backing the plan to support these critical infrastructure improvements.
